Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such drugs must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
