Social Media Content Creators Driving Parallel Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on new investigations.

Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are urged to contact these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where communities with numerous of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Concerns

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Material Elimination

According to TikTok, the service has removed problematic material and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The organization said it was committed to keeping the platform secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.

After minutes of entering one group, a seller shared contact information, where most purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Information and Pricing

Within these groups, messages show dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should be used, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using social media. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has previously encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
